Lake Hartwell - Georgia, South Carolina

Lake Hartwell is a 56,000 acre lake that covers portions of Georgia and South Carolina. The lake was created with the construction of the Hartwell Dam on the Savannah River and includes sections of the Tugaloo, and Seneca Rivers. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began lake construction in 1955 and completed construction in 1963. Lake Harwell was named for the American Revolutionary War figure Nancy Hart. Lake Hartwell is one of the south's largest man made reservoirs and provides recreational activities for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages.

Recreational Activities at Lake Hartwell

Recreational activities at the lake include, boating, camping, fishing, picnicking, kayaking, bird & watching, swimming, sailing, wakeboarding, jet skiing, water skiing, hiking and biking.

Lake Hartwell State Parks

There are 2 South Carolina State Parks and 1 Georgia State Park at Lake Hartwell. Sadlers Creek State Park and Lake Hartwell State Park are both located in South Carolina. Tugaloo State Park is located in Georgia. The state parks feature developed campsites, cottage rentals, picnic shelters, boat launch ramps, shower and restroom facilities, playgrounds, hiking trails, biking trails and more.

Camping & Picnicking

In addition to the state park campgrounds, there are also numerous additional campgrounds located at Lake Hartwell. Most campsites include electrical and water hookups and can accommodate RV and tent campers. Some campgrounds also have a number of primitive tent campsites. Common campground amenities include showers, restrooms, dump stations, boat launch ramps, fishing piers, playgrounds and swimming beaches. If you are hosting a large group at Lake Hartwell, picnic shelters are available at some campgrounds and recreational access areas.

Boating

Lake Hartwell is a favorite for Georgia and South Carolina boaters and water lovers. There are numerous boat launch ramps and marinas located throughout the lake providing easy access. All types of motorized and non-motorized boats and water recreational vehicles are welcome at Lake Hartwell. If you do not own a boat, pontoon, ski and fishing boats are available for rent at most marinas locations.

Fishing

Fishing at Lake Hartwell is one of the most popular activities for lake visitors. Common fish species caught at the lake include large mouth bass, striped bass, sunfish, crappie, and catfish. Fish can be caught from boat, shoreline or from fishing piers. A valid Georgia or South Carolina fishing license is required.
